June 10 or 11 Dear Victurian,
I have finally made time to write. I will recount my most recent adventures first, then try to fill you in on the rest. First, you should know that I have joined up with a band of adventurers that no one would expect to be a cohesive group. There is Ann Jonson, a quite experienced archer and very good at disabling various traps. Then, there is Wybjorn, he is a Bridger and only just maturing, but his strength and enthusiasm is more inspiring each day. Next is Julian, he is the most unsusual of all, being an orc in the hide of a horse - yes, he is a horse with pretty amazing abilities and his knowledge of orcs is firsthand since he used to be one. He is actually Wybjorn's father. Next, a fairly new member of the group, Arran a Skaald of the Arias - an amazing archer! Lastly, but not least is the Gnome, Bacucu, a Wizard of some power. He has been imprisoned by White Dragons for the last ten years, but when our merry band killed the Dragons, then Bacucu was at last free. He has some re-acclimation to do into society, but he is quite full of energy and knowledge of the Karpuc League. But, I digress. The most important party member is not a living creature at all, but none other than N'Arc'Ur! Yes, you read correctly - I am in possession of Lord Merikest's Mace. I am still quite in awe of it and at last we have made our way South, through the Waste to the Heimlach Dwarfs where the Shield is held. On the morrow I will undergo a test to prove that the mace I carry is the true N'Arc'Ur.
Actually the Waste itself was not so bad, getting to the Waste was terrible. We had to get past two White Dragons and in the process we lost a party member, Eammon, a most accomplished Monk. Next we liberated Bacucu, whom we had no idea was in the Dragons' tower (actually it was the Dragons in Bacucu's tower). Then, we saw a huge orc army amassing itself in the Pass. I fear for southern Kalevala! The League is making its way North, my old friend, please make all necessary arrangements with our people!
Anyhow, we avoided the army, but did run into some scouts and killed them, taking their horses for our use. Then, we happened upon a small slave caravan. Unfortunately, Bacucu made a poor judgement in the construction of the wagons so when he fireballed the caravan it actually killed all of the innocents in the wagons. But, we were able to kill all of the orcs and slavers as well. I found a book in the magic users' wagon - A History of Kalevala. I plan to begin my reading of it soon.
Once in the Waste, the first night we encountered the most disgusting creature I have ever heard of much less seen (or smelled). I hesitate to describe it, but I will for our records: It appeared to be constructed of the entrails and excrement of living creatures, it was very tall, and had the most nauseating smell - I think that was actually part of it's weaponry, but N'Arc'Ur was able to discern that healing spells actually hurt it, so the two of us working together and Ann's healing arrows were able to bring down the creature. The gentlemen of our group had the unfortunate reaction of panic and all ran away! Oh, and Julian was very instrumental in taking down this construct. Luckily, I have been able to heal everyone in the party from all the damage we took from this encounter.
Next, a couple of days later we encountered two more strange creatures. These were huge animals that walked upright and had long trumpeting snouts and tusks. These creatures were dispatched by Wybjorn, Arran and Ann for the most part. Bacucu and I contributed some offensive support as well from a safe distance.
After that we continued South and N'Arc'Ur was able to discern his brother's proximity. This is one of the features Lord Merikest built into the Items, that when they are within a certain distance of one another, they become aware of each other. Twice a day N'Arc'Ur can "feel" his brother's presence and general position. So we followed his directions and came out of the Waste. We finally came to a green valley with a fresh flowing stream. As we were rejoicing in the fresh water we were surrounded by Dwarfs. After a tense moment, we discerned that these were the exact Dwarfs we were searching and they agreed to take us with them (without killing us) if the bearer of the Mace agreed to undergoing a "Test". I agreed without hesitation, since I am sure that I am indeed bearing N'Arc'Ur. It is now the eve of the test and I am feeling somewhat weary and a little anxious. I felt that writing all of this down would help alleviate my fears. I do feel that now that I have reflected upon my adventures, that I am ready to take on whatever the Dwarfs can toss my way. Now that this missive has turned into an epistle I will sign off.
With Best Regards and Blessings, Jenneth
